Started as a traditional jazz trio, the Henning Neidhardt Trio has been steadily evolving since its inception in 2019. Presently, the three musicians from Germany are exploring textures and subtle musical hues somewhere between ambient, dreamscape, and drone music. Drawing upon a vast library of self-collected field recordings, Henning Neidhardt, Duy Luong, and Karl-F. Degenhardt skillfully blend electronic and acoustic signals, resulting in a seamless fusion. The resulting music is always freely improvised, telling stories as it unfolds.
Crossing disciplinary boundaries, the trio also collaborates on their own short films exploring various thoughts and ideas, often inviting guests to engage in discussions about art, nostalgia, or other themes within the context of their films.
The Henning Neidhardt Trio came together during their joint studies in Jazz Performing Arts at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, and in 2022, they released their debut album "First Of The Roll" on Double Moon Records.
Between Heaven and Asphalt - Japan's Dialogue in Sound and Image
Short Project Description:
The Henning Neidhardt Trio has been invited to the Togatta Artist Residency between Fukushima and Sendai for April 2025. During their three-week stay in northern Japan, the trio led by bandleader Henning Neidhardt will explore and reflect on the contrasting lifestyles between urban and rural areas in a short film. Particularly, the perspective of people from the major cities of Fukushima and Sendai on the surrounding nature with forests, lakes, and volcanoes will play a central role.
Additionally, Henning Neidhardt (piano/ synthesizer), Karl-F. Degenhardt (drums, sampler, videography), and Duy Luong (bass/ synthesizer) will compose and produce the soundtrack for this film during – and inspired by – the journey. In addition, the trio will invite local musicians to collaborate in creating a diverse and authentic soundtrack.
After their return, the completed short film will be presented in three German cinemas and made available on popular digital platforms.
